Envirokut: A History

Co-founders Larry Katzer and Bob Matthews started Envirokut in 2013 with a question: How can we help beautify the highways and back roads of America, while making it safer for equipment operators, and more cost-effective for the Departments of Transportation and individuals, who manage those roads? They’ve been solving that problem ever since.

Katzer and Matthews began their research and development, experimenting with Mulag implements on the front of a GMC truck and a Unimog truck. In 2014, they had several breakthroughs. Among these were landing a contract with Dixie Lawn Service, which allowed them to practice cutting grass along the highways of South Carolina with their modified equipment. Another was meeting with the leadership of Mulag in Frankfurt, Germany, and later at Galabau trade show in Nuremburg, after which Mulag’s engineers took Katzer and Matthews to the German countryside and taught them how to seamlessly operate Mulag implements. In addition to Mulag, Envirokut has since become a dealer for Multihog, a tool-carrier and an exclusive distributor for another large manufacturer in Italy called Energreen.

In 2015, Envirokut said “Goodbye” to their Holder tractor and purchased their first Multihog carrier, which they brought from Ireland to continue their work with the South Carolina Department of Transportation and Dixie Lawn Service. During this time, Katzer and Matthews did a lot of experimenting with how best to design municipal equipment for roadside maintenance.

In the fall of 2016, Envirokut was invited to a meeting at CalTrans in Southern California, where they pitched the equipment and work they had been designing and implementing. By the spring of 2017, they’d landed a rental contract for four units with CalTrans; and by winter, a three-year, $9.5 million purchase contract for 30 machines and implements with the South Carolina Department of Transportation. Their reputation for personalized service was paying off.
